Used-Car Mileage by Age Calculator

Use model year and mileage to calculate a rough annual average. This is a prompt for checking records and maintenance needs, not a pass/fail test for a used car.

Calculations stay in this page. No account, email or payment required. Enter model year and whole miles without commas.

1886 through next calendar year.

Whole miles from 0 to 10,000,000; this does not verify the odometer.

Formula and assumptions

Approximate age = the UTC calendar year when you calculate − model year, with a minimum of zero. Average miles per year = current mileage ÷ approximate age, displayed to the nearest whole mile. Current and next-model-year cars show no annual average because there is no positive calendar-year age to divide by.

Worked example

Fictional example: using 2026 as the reference year, a 2020-model car with 72,000 miles has a calendar-model-year age of six and averages 12,000 miles per year. That arithmetic says nothing about the actual date it entered service or how the miles were driven.

What the result cannot tell you

Model year is not an in-service date, so this can overstate or understate the actual annual average. It does not verify the odometer, predict remaining life or set a normal-mileage threshold. Compare dated records and arrange an independent inspection. Model years from 1886 through next year and mileages up to 10 million are supported as input limits, not reliability standards.
